Interviews with a number of musicians from the Black Mountain, N.C., area, including Woody ("Manwat") Grant (1925- ), part Cherokee, part Anglo-American old-time music piano player, of Old Fort, McDowell County, N.C.; Hanley Medford (1920- ) and Luke Medford (1924- ), Anglo-American amateur country music duo, of Old Fort, N.C.; Jeeter Riddle, Anglo-American old-time music guitarist and lead musician at Ray Greene's Monday Night Picking Party in Black Mountain, Buncombe County, N.C.; and Robert Russell, of Swannanoa, Buncombe County, N.C., old-time music and picking party enthusiast. In the interviews, Woody ("Manwat") Grant, discusses piano old-time music and plays a number of songs; Hanley and Luke Medford reminisce about growing up around Black Mountain, early country performers, and the first country radio programs; Jeeter Riddle discusses local music history and performs several songs; and Robert Russell explains the appeal of picking parties as musical events. There are also recordings of picking parties, as well as two recordings of Ray Greene's Monday Night Picking Party, the only one in the area that features old-time piano music. The music is interspersed with pieces of conversations and short interview segments.
